Medicare Advantage (Part C): How It Works and What It Covers

Find out how Medicare Advantage (Part C) works, what benefits it includes, and how it compares to Original Medicare.

Published on October 28, 2025

Medicare Advantage, commonly referred to as Part C, is a private-plan alternative to Original Medicare. These plans are offered by insurance companies that have been approved by the federal government. They deliver all Part A and Part B benefits and frequently include additional coverage not available through Original Medicare.

How Does Medicare Advantage Work?

When you sign up for a Medicare Advantage plan, you remain enrolled in Medicare, but a private insurer manages your coverage instead of the federal government. Here is how the process works:

  1. You must already be enrolled in both Medicare Part A and Part B before joining a Medicare Advantage plan.
  2. You continue paying your Part B premium directly to Medicare.
  3. You may owe an additional premium to the plan itself (although many plans charge $0 in extra premiums).
  4. Your plan is required to cover every service that Original Medicare covers, though cost-sharing amounts may differ.

Typical Medicare Advantage Benefits

In addition to standard Part A and Part B coverage, many Medicare Advantage plans provide:

Annual Out-of-Pocket Limits

A key benefit of Medicare Advantage is the required annual out-of-pocket maximum. Original Medicare does not cap your yearly spending, but Medicare Advantage plans must set a limit on your annual out-of-pocket costs for covered services. For 2026, the Medicare-established maximum for in-network services is $9,250.

Is Medicare Advantage Right for You?

A Medicare Advantage plan could be a strong option if you:

  • Want dental, vision, and hearing coverage bundled into your plan
  • Prefer a single plan that combines medical and prescription drug benefits
  • Are willing to use a designated network of providers and hospitals
  • Value the security of an annual out-of-pocket spending cap

When to Enroll

You can join a Medicare Advantage plan during:

  • Your Initial Enrollment Period when you first become eligible for Medicare
  • The Annual Enrollment Period (October 15 through December 7)
  • The Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (January 1 through March 31), which lets current Medicare Advantage members switch plans or go back to Original Medicare

Reviewing the plans available in your area each year helps ensure you have the ideal mix of benefits, costs, and provider access.
